Fresh produce access made easier through Mobile Farmers' Market
Posted on 09/29/2020

Jackson, Tenn. – The West Tennessee Farmers' Market is partnering with Jackson Housing Authority to make fresh produce available to seniors through a mobile farmers’ market.

"I was elated when I heard about this opportunity to partner with the City of Jackson (Farmers’ Market)," said Mark Reid, Director of Jackson Housing Authority. "We understand transportation may be difficult for many of our senior residents to get to the West Tennessee Farmers' Market, so we are happy to make this possible."

The West Tennessee Farmers’ Market sees on average 70,000 people during peak season according to West Tennessee Farmers' Market Manager Bruce Bond.

“The Mobile Farmers’ Market is a great idea for seniors with limited transportation and to reach out to those in need,” Bond said. “I think it will make a huge impact on the community.”

The mobile market, which will be the first of its kind in Jackson, TN, will consist of two produce vendors who set up at the West Tennessee Farmers' Market. The vendors will set up at Rosewood Garden Apartment on Tuesday, October 6, 2020. The vendors will be set up from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

“We are planning to work closely with the vendors here at the West Tennessee Farmers’ Market,” Bond said. “We will put in place incentive for those who choose to be involved with the mobile market.”

Reid said that many of the JHA residents in the area are excited about the Mobile Farmers’ Market coming. Reid also hopes that more vendors will be added in the future.

"We look forward to having this opportunity to help our seniors who may not be able to easily access the farmers' market," said Mayor Scott Conger. “We are so grateful to have such dedicated employees like Bruce Bond who saw a need to reach out beyond the permanent location of the West Tennessee Farmers’ Market and into the community.”

The Mobile Farmers’ Market will currently be cash only with hopes to accept food stamps/EBT in the future. The mobile market will follow social distancing guidelines.
