General Overview of Project E.S.C.A.P.E.

We are currently facing a critical and often overlooked trend in fire safety: overall home fires are down from years past, the lethality rate in home fires is not declining; it is accelerating, showing a troubling reversal of long-term safety gains. The death rate in one- and two-family homes now stands at the highest rate since 2000. This crisis is partially driven by the rapid growth of modern fires, caused by synthetic materials, lightweight construction and open floor plans has shrunk the escape window from 17 minutes down to less than four minutes. Compounding this issue, statistics highlight a significant increase in multiple-fatality home fires.

Project ESCAPE is the comprehensive, system-wide approach built on the core principle that Every Second Counts (E.S.C.A.P.E.), demanding urgent action and targeted interventions from all stakeholders to maximize efficiency and proficiency.


E – Every.
Every moment counts in a fire emergency. With only minutes to spare, the faster occupants and firefighters must act to improve the chances of survival. Time is the single most valuable resource when a fire breaks out.

S – Second.
Each second plays a critical role. Quick decision-making is essential. Delaying even for ten seconds can mean the difference between escaping or being trapped by toxic smoke.

C – Counts.
Every action taken during a fire emergency contributes to survival—or detracts from it. Understanding the extreme urgency of the 3-4 minute window empowers individuals to prioritize movement over panic.

A – Action.
Immediate, decisive action is crucial. Passive observation ("Is that really smoke?") is dangerous. Active response—moving toward an exit immediately upon hearing an alarm—is vital to beating the clock.

P – Purpose.
During a fire, you must have a singular, overriding purpose: immediate evacuation for survival. A clear purpose eliminates fatal hesitation.

E – Efficiency.
Efficient evacuations minimize risk. Because time is so limited, occupants must use pre-planned routes swiftly without second-guessing. An efficient escape ensures everyone is moving toward safety without backtracking or confusion.
