Illegal dumping of trash significantly impacts the perception of our city including quality of life and economic development. It tarnishes the city's appearance creating a negative impression on residents and visitors, affecting their perception of cleanliness and safety which leads to a decrees in satisfaction and potentially impacting property values. Litter and illegal dumping pose severe environmental threats as well. Hazardous materials improperly disposed of can contaminate soil and cause flooding due to blocked stormwater drains and ditches which could contaminate our waterways. Illegal dumping of trash not only affects the aesthetics and perceived safety of our city making it imperative for city officials to address and prevent such activities through proper waste management and enforcement of regulations.

Help Stop Illegal Dumping

• Use the Ready 311 App or email [email protected] to report illegal dumping.

• If you have witnessed a person illegally dumping and have information (including pictures, license plate #, etc.) please report to Jackson Police Department and/or send information to [email protected]

• Help Jackson Police Department identify persons suspected of illegal dumping

• Check out our Health and Sanitation page for information on how to properly dispose of items

•  Only set out bulk waste piles per our Health and Sanitation policy (only when you have bulk pickup scheduled)

Tips to Prevent Illegal Dumping on Your Property

• Keep your property clear of overgrown trees and shrubs

• Make sure that your property is well lit

• Setting bulk items out prior to your scheduled time attracts additional dumping. Monitor your property.

• Install security cameras. You may then register or intergrade your camera with Jackson Police Department by selecting the Camera Registry button.

Jackson Police Department

• will fine for illegal dumping.

• will work with citizens to submit litter and illegal dumping claims.

• will patrol for illegal tarping by commercial hauling and dumping industries.

Health & Sanitation (731-425-8545)

• will send certified letters to residential addresses utilizing city Health & Sanitation services.

Code Enforcement Officers (731-425-8262)

• will track and send certified letters for illegal dumping in residential areas.

Jackson City Court can impose a $50 fine for littering offenses through City Ordinances.

The City has adopted all of the misdemeanor offenses against the State of Tennessee to also be offenses against the City of Jackson. (Jackson Municipal Code 11-101)
